Dear lovely cucumba clients,

Our prices are going up – but ever so slightly……..

Please note that we haven’t increased prices since Feb 2010 and some of our prices have actually been unchanged since Feb 2008 despite inflation, VAT and supplier cost increases.

In order to maintain our service to you (and to keep the salon open for business), we now have to up a few our prices….

THE GOOD NEWS is that our TopUp range remains unchanged at £9.50 and so too the majority of our waxing services. And because we love you so much, we’ve introduced some even BIGGER discounts (e.g. full leg, Hollywood & underarm hot wax only cost £70 instead of £100 as at 03/05/12) which mean that some prices are actually CHEAPER than ever before ! …Whoopie !!!!

Additionally, you can lock in prices for 3 months by pre paying at old prices OR you can take advantage of our combo’s, discounted packages and our Pickled & Pampered deals which offer you the same great service at significantly lower prices.

As always we’re dying to hear your thoughts on our price change announcement and hope that you will continue to show us the same loving that we’ve been showing all our cucumba people since 2005.

AND don’t forget…. we are still cheaper than the competition – ROCK ON!!!  Cucumba x

Everyone’s skin is different, which is why Urban Tan has developed an exclusive range of spray solutions that can be used either on their own or custom blended to create the perfect result for each individual client. A fourth generation sunless tanning system, Urban Tan was developed for use with high definition TV where even the tiniest skin flaw is exposed. Urban Tan is the most flawless, natural looking sunless solution that the market has seen – the results are simply amazing. Urban Tan is the spray tanning choice for celebrities including Paris Hilton and Bianca Gascoigne. It was also selected as the tan of choice for hit shows Dancing on Ice, Dancing on Ice Live Tour series 2 and the initial Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour.

Urban Tan aroma spray tan is different, not just by results but because it is more than just a tan, it is a beauty treatment that tans. First of all, it is unscented, so it is suitable for all skin types. Available in four paraben free base colours (SunSpray, Chocolate, Celebrity and Sunset), Urban Tan can also be custom-blended to create an individual tan for each and every client. It can be personalised even further with one of six essential-oil based Aroma Zone fragrances, which can be added to suit a client’s mood – from zesty Fruit Vibe to relaxing Sensual. There’s even Homme for men. The benefits of essential oils with the moisturising (aloe vera) and skin firming effects of the solution means that clients receive a beauty treatment while they tan! This unique twist to spray tanning also helps combat the ‘biscuit’ development smell of processing DHA, the active ingredient in most sunless products. For a final touch of glamour, Urban Tan created three Urban Glitz shimmer products, which can be used on the hair and skin, both in the salon and at home, also creating the opportunity for additional retail sales.

Urban Tan invested a huge amount of time and money researching and developing a range of solutions that was born simply from the results the brand aspired to achieve and deliver through demand. The Urban Tan solutions certainly provide a natural colour without any of the typical tango tinge that is so common in other products and that most salons and operators have had to put up with in the past! It became an obsession to get the lotions absolutely right and many months were spent in the lab with a team of chemists to get them perfect for market. This determination to achieve perfection required the painstaking process of measuring, testing and reviewing changes in amount of solution ingredients, microgram step by microgram step!

The active ingredient in most sunless tans is DHA, Dihydroxyacetone. Derived from sugar cane it is a white powder similar to icing sugar. During recent research and development, Urban Tan concluded that by using a second ingredient in the solution, Erythrulose, enhanced longevity and a deepened colour could be achieved. Therefore, Urban Tan uses both active ingredients to offer a better sunless spray tanning result.

Urban Tan solutions have a hint of cosmetic bronzer, similar to a bronzing powder that is subtle enough for a therapist and the client to see but no one else. This means the therapist can see where she is applying, but most importantly, the client leaves the salon or ‘tanning party’ encouraged that some colour has been applied and is able to carry on about their business for the rest of the day. This is important as it allows treatments to be performed throughout the day, great for a lunch time or in between meeting treatment!
It is increasingly popular today that younger clients desire an immediately dark result on application. With this in mind Urban Tan have now launched two NEW Booster products, Black velvet bronzing drops & Ultra Boost additive to satisfy the nations demand to be dark divas.

Available in 1 litre and 4 litre bottles and a 1 gallon (4 litre) stay fresh ‘wine-box’ style dispenser.

Urban Tan born from obsession…. keeping it real!

The benefits of tinting to the eyes can be amazing. Creating an effect of having darker, longer, fuller eyelashes. The procedure is one of the fastest ways one can enhance your eyes that will get you retuning time and time again.

There are many colours the client can ask for. But the most popular has to be blue / black.
First time clients are required to have a patch test 24 hours prior to the treatment. This is done by a small amount of tint being placed behind the ear. If you are allergic. You will feel a burning or itchy sensation ( but saying this in all my years as a therapist I’ve never come across a client who is allergic)

A client may have their eyes sting. But THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE ALLERGIC………

Special occasions such as weddings and holidays pull the client into the salon for their first tinting experience.

The first step to be performed is to carefully place cotton wool to the lower eye and the Vaseline around the area to ensure the eyes and surrounding skin are well protected. Then the dye is to be meticulously applied to the upper and lower lashes.

Once the dye has set, it will be rinsed out, and the eye area will be cleaned thoroughly to remove any residue remaining from the procedure. The results will be darker lashes that appear fuller and longer, creating a dramatic effect that will last several weeks.

Individuals that have difficulty using mascara cosmetics will benefit tremendously by having their lashes tinted.
Mascara, regardless of how much it costs, or what their commercials advertise, tends to clump. Those living in high humidity climates tend to suffer from this problem on a daily basis and rave about the benefits of tinting their eyelashes.

Threading hair is an ancient method commonly practiced in Eastern countries, like Egypt and India, but is becoming very popular here in the West. Threading removes the entire hair follicle, lasting up to 6 weeks.

How Does it Work?

A cotton thread is pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion, to trap hair in a mini lasso, and lifts hair right out of the follicle.

Threading of eyebrow as compared to waxing, tweezing, and razors.
• Waxing, tweezing, and razors all make facial hair grow back thicker and faster. With threading, hair re-growth becomes finer and lighter after regular treatments.
• Waxing tends to burn, peel, and irritate the skin, especially the skin around the eyes. Threading does not.
• Repeated waxing increases the chances of wrinkles, especially around the sensitive eye area. Threading does not so long as the stretching is not excessive.
• Tweezing and razors increase the chances of in-grown hairs and cutting the skin.
• Threading is highly recommended as an excellent option for those who use Retin-A, Accutane, and similar products. This is because threading is suitable for sensitive skin as
no chemicals are involved so therefore no risk of a reaction.
• Threading is a more precise method so you get a better, longer lasting shape.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often does one require threading?
It varies from person to person as hair grows in different cycles, but usually every 2-3 weeks is recommended for a tidy.

What is the aftercare after threading?
Avoid the following for at least 24 hours:
- Touching the treatment areas
- Make up
- Chemical products such as perfume
- Heat treatments such as sunbeds
- Hot baths or showers
- No sunbeds or sun exposure
- Wear loose clothing after treatment

Cucumba, based in Soho, is a perfect place for men or women to get their quick fix beauty treatments in a lunch break, before or after work. Tucked away in the middle of Poland Street, just off of Oxford Circus, it is a hip beauty bar with an air of relaxation.

Prices start from £9.50 depending if you want a 10 minute treatment or a 60 minute treatment so the salon is perfect for a quick fix or a longer more luxurious pamper day.

Cleverly, the salon have sorted their treatments so that they can be altered to “Top Up” or “Quick Fix” (10 minutes) “Pitstop” (20 minutes) “Cucumba” 30 minutes, “Cucumba Deluxe” 45 minutes or “Cumba Supa Dupa” 60 minutes.

The treatments range from anything from waxing to massage to nails and they are always the latest in new innovative beauty treatments adding to their “cool” reputation.

Also perfect for hen do’s, corporate parties or just a day out with friends as they offer “Party Packages”. These start at just £37.50 per person and their very handy website makes it easy to work out exactly what you can have for this amount depending on how long you want to be there for.

I popped in recently in between meetings after breaking a nail (I know, that really does sound like a typically girly thing to do). I had 30 minutes to spare and just wanted pretty nails so they fitted me in for a 20 minute “PitStop” manicure and I came out 20 minutes later as promised with shiny, tidy sparkling nails.

A word of warning though, this is no fluffy robe, steam and mosaic tiled spa. It’s a friendly, relaxed venue where massages are conducted downstairs behind heavy curtains and where threading is briskly carried out whilst toes are drying at the very public pedicure station. Nevertheless, the results are impressive and each treatment works on the basis of customizing what you really need within that time slot on the day.

The staff are brilliantly friendly and it is a really cosy and comfortable salon, perfect for any occasion. Designed to appeal to busy London-dwellers on their lunch break or heading from the office to the cocktail bar, it’s a refreshing and affordable way to get a spa hit without it eating into either your time or bank balance. Fast, efficient and fabulous prices—this is fast track pampering that everyone can benefit from.

Hot wax…. Strip wax…. What’s the difference?

The names do not refer to the temperature of the wax but the type of wax. Hot wax is thicker than strip wax and does not require the use of cloth or paper strips to remove it. Hot wax behaves in a different way to strip wax and as a result requires a completely different technique to apply and remove. For instance, hot wax is more thickly applied to the skin and hardens in a couple of seconds trapping the hairs. At this point the wax itself is pulled away from the skin and the hairs come away with it.

Hot wax depilation has been available for many years but only in the past few years has it become popular again.

DID YOU KNOW that In the 80’s and early 90’s hat wax was always reused by putting it through a filter to clean out all the hairs that was removed from previous clients. This wasn’t the most hygienic of practices and as a result, there was a big hype that this type of hair removal could potentially spread diseases such as AID’s. But now this has all CHANGED – the wax and spatula are not reused.

The Benefits of Hotwax

When done correctly, a hotwax treatment is a lot less painful than a strip wax treatment and leaves the skin feeling smoother and a lot less red.

Hot wax is better for sensitive areas like underarm, genitals and for the face. It is therefore perfect for underarm, bikini, brazilian, hollywood, and
eyebrow waxing

Hot wax is much gentler on the skin as it does not require as much stretching as strip wax and it does not strip the skin as easily as strip wax does and
is therefore less likely to bruise the client.

Stubborn and strong hairs can be more easily and safely removed with hot wax.

The client’s hair will grow back finer: you can tell whether a client uses hot wax or strip wax as with the latter, hair grows back course in the same way
as it would had it been shaved off.

Clients have less in growing hairs when they use hot wax.

       Did you know ????

There are many countries that will offer hot wax for waxing the bikini area eg Australia, Brazil, America, France. This is due to the superior qualities of hot wax and the higher risks associated with strip wax when using it for such a sensitive area.

Clients will need to be waxed between every 4-6 weeks depending on your hair regrowth rate. The hair only needs to be around 1cm.

So,….. next time you’re thinking about being waxed. Why not try hot waxing on your bikini area compared to strip wax……….
